CHINESISCHER HERBST
15. - 17.11.2012
Fotografie, Videoarbeiten, Konzert, Geruchsausstellung
im Kühlhaus am Gleisdreieck
Luckenwalderstr. 3, 10963 Berlin
15.–17.11.2012 18.00–24.00 Uhr 2. Obergeschoß

Smells of the City - Eine erstmalige Geruchsausstellung in Berlin
generieren.

After five years of field work, Ms. Tolaas has reproduced the essence of Kansas City in twenty scratch-and-sniff cards. It is a creative project, no doubt, but there is another way to look at it.

Powerpoint and the Perfume of Reading Tan Lin Tuesday, July 24, 7pm Screening and Discussion Artists Space : Books & Talks 55 Walker Street New York NY 10013  $5 Entrance Donation  Members Free Limited capacity, entrance on a first come, first served basis Responding to an invitation from Artists Space to contribute a text to an exhibition publication, in Spring 2012 writer Tan Lin produced two works on Powerpoint that implicate the nature of reading and writing beyond the printed page. For this event, Bibliographic Sound Track and The Ph.D Sounds will be projected with the former accompanied by a live perfume soundtrack, the latter with a DJ set by Mösco dj. In collaboration with Triple Canopy, the event will also include a forum discussion between Triple Canopy editor Dan Visel, Artists Space curator Richard Birkett and Tan Lin. The two videos explore communications platforms such as Twitter, SMS, status updates, IM chats, programming languages, video game walk-throughs, the couplet, and the Powerpoint slide, as they affect reading and genre. The screening event performs an audience’s reading in an environment that has absorbed everything next to it in the room – from bibliographies to the smell of wet spanghum peat moss, the perfume Wet London Pavement, Glade Everglade Air Freshener and the music of New Order and Lucky Dragons. Tan Lin is the author of more than ten books, including Heath (Plagiarism/Outsource) (2009) and 7 Controlled Vocabularies and Obituary 2004. The Joy of Cooking (2010). His work has appeared in numerous journals including Artforum, Cabinet, and The New York Times Book Review and his video work has screened at the Yale Art Museum, the Drawing Center, and the Ontological Hysterical Theatre. The First Scracth 'n sniff sculpture in the worldFlower Fragum Cardamomi is the first Scratch 'n Sniff Sculpture in the world! It measures 9 m high and more than 1000 strawberries made of epoxy grow on the plant. You have to scratch 'n sniff the strawberries and plant to discover the scents. The smell of fresh strawberries in combination with the smell of cardamon makes you feel happy. The feeling of the structure of the plant and strawberries is also important while scratching, touching the sculpture.

A very interesting lecture at TEDx Danubia 2011 by Chandler Burr, the Curator of the Department of Olfactory Art at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. A nice comparison between visual arts, photography, architecture, music, film and olfactory art. A must seen for everyone who's interested in olfactory art.

By exploiting the subjective, associative impact of smells, in combination with visual images, I generate a kind of meta-sensory experience that goes beyond purely seeing or smelling. I'm a plastic artist who paints with scents, produces olfactory objects, soap paintings and sculptures, creates video and live performances, makes three-dimensional drawings and builds poetic smell installations.

Everyone who has ever smelt my work cannot fail to recognise that his works prompt quite a reaction. You either love it or you feel attacked via your nasal senses. If the latter is true it is often because the spectator adopts a reserved attitude at first as a result of being wary of the unknown. That is exactly why smells in visual art have been and are still positively avoided. People like to compare and want a return or recognition. This is difficult with smells because they act directly on the limbic system and don‘t give you the necessary time and chance to translate things like you do with „sight“. Smells act on your memory subconsciously and so you associate your own subjective feelings with a specific smell. Your attitude to the object is determined by the smell memory of a certain moment. Add then the combination with the visual aspect of the artwork and you get a mix that does not appear to be completely predictable. Alongside the pleasance of some smells there are also smells that warn us of danger though we do not always need these indications because of habituation. If you cross the street there are many damaging smells present because of pollution: exhaust fumes, rotting processes from discarded foodstuffs, toxic fumes from asphalt and other building materials that are freed by heat from the sun, polluted rain, sewers, etc. But the normal city person has become used to all the exhaust fumes and other air-polluting substances.
