Smells of the City - Eine erstmalige Geruchsausstellung in Berlin
mit eigenwilligen, typischen und assoziativen Gerüchen der Stadt Peking.
Kreiert von Shizuko Yoshikuni und Manuel Kuschnig, Tokyo/ Wien.
Jede Stadt hat ihre typischen Gerüche. Die Atmosphäre einer Stadt generiert sich dabei nicht
durch das reflektierende, rational Begreifbare, sondern vielmehr durch das Impulshafte, mit dem
man dort konfrontiert wird – und es sind nicht zuletzt die signifikanten Gerüche einer Stadt, die
einen in bestimmte Stimmungen versetzen und Emotionen und Erinnerungen hinterlassen. Denn
die Räume einer Stadt sind komplexer als das bildhafte Image, auf das ein Städtebild gerne reduziert
wird – viel eindrucksvoller noch sind die olfaktorischen Räume, welche diese selbst
generieren.

Martynka Wawrzyniak went to some lengths to collect her own body odor, have it chemically analyzed, and then offer up a re-styled version to gallery visitors. The piece is called "Smell Me" and opens this month in New York.

The fragrance’s marketing campaign of Lady Gaga examines the dual nature of celebrity and underscores that it’s the world’s first black Eau De Parfum.
